Rotary Presents Dictionaries to Knox Co. Third Graders

Submitted by Monica Zahn and Davey Strickler

On Wednesday, January 16, 2008, the Knox County Rotary Club handed out dictionaries to all the third graders at the Knox County Elementary School.
Rotarians present were David Strickler, Club President, Ricky Winter, Candy Humes, Staci Eleazarraraz, Amy Miller, Tim Schrage, and Beth Strange.
To explain Rotary, David Strickler first asked the kids if anyone knew what Rotary is: no hands went up.  He then asked if anyone knew what Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts are: everyone’s hand went up.  David said that Scouting for kids and Rotary for adults are similar in that both enjoy doing good deeds for others.
The dictionaries were handed out and President Ricky Winter asked the kids to help him look up a couple of words.  The first was "team" and the second was "success".  He told the kids to be sure and write their names in the front of the book on the line right above the big Rotary wheel so the books could be returned if ever misplaced.
Rotarian Amy Miller told the kids about some extras in the back of the dictionaries:  maps, charts, presidential biographies, the Constitution, fact about the 50 states and other useful things that the kids would need to learn later in their scholastic careers.
The students seemed very happy to receive dictionaries of their very own.  A good time was had by all.
