 KC Band To Compete In Parade of Champions

Marching band fans will have a chance to see over twenty-one bands in action at the 17th Annual Parade of Champions parade and field show competition at Kahoka, MO on Saturday, October 11, 2008. The Knox County Eagle Marching Band will be among the bands attending.

The competition, sponsored by the Clark County R-1 Fine Arts Boosters, will begin with the parade starting at 2:00 p.m. Eighteen bands including CCR-1 Middle and High School bands will participate in the parade.

The fields show competition will start at 5:00 p.m. at the CCR-1 activity field. Nine bands will be participating in the competition. Local fans will enjoy exhibition performances by the CCR-1 Middle School band and the CCR-1 Marching Indians.
“I’m looking forward to hearing and seeing the different bands perform their parade and field shows for the competitions,” commented Jenny Ross, president of the Fine Arts Boosters.

Other schools scheduled to appear in the parade are Highland High School, Centralia Panther Pride Band, Canton High School and Junior High bands, New Bloomfield Marching Wildcats, La Plata High School, South Shelby High School, Scotland County High School, Winfield High School, Putnam County Middle School and the CCR-1 middle school and high schools from Missouri; Illini West Marching Chargers, Warsaw High School, Western High School, Quincy High School and Quincy Junior High School from Illinois; Davis County High School from Iowa.

Bands competing in the field show event are Centralia Panther Pride Band, Hannibal High School, Bowling Green High School, Winfield High School in Missouri; Illini West Marching Chargers, Warsaw High School, Western High School and Quincy High School in Illinois; Davis County High School and Fort Madison High School in Iowa.
“We have the opportunity to watch some very talented musicians perform right here in Kahoka,” commented Ross. Some of the field show programs that will be performed are Gladiators by Quincy High School, The Eagles by Illini West Marching Chargers, Winfield will do The Beatles and Clark County will perform West Side Story.”

“I continue to be amazed at how smooth everything runs each year,” said Bob Dooley, CCR-1 High School music instructor. “That is thanks to our parents and volunteers. It couldn’t be done without them.”

“Most people have no idea how much organization, coordination, and volunteers it takes to run the parade and field show competitions,” added Ross. “We have a lot of new chairpersons and volunteers this year. The Boosters want to thank everyone for all the help.”

Winners of the parade and field show competitions will be selected on performance of music, marching precision, auxiliary units, and overall presentation. Special overall awards will be given to the best wind section, best percussion section, best auxiliary unit, best field commander, and best overall or the Sweepstakes Award.

“This is an important fundraiser for the Fine Arts Boosters,” said Ross. “The money raised at the Parade of Champions goes to repairing and buying new instruments and uniforms. Last year, some of the proceeds went to cover shipping the instruments for the band’s trip to Hawaii.”

Sweatshirts, T-shirts, concessions, and souvenir programs will all be available for purchase. Admission will be charged for the field show competition.
“Parade of Champions is a great example of students, parents, and school working together to produce a quality event,” stated Dooley. “It shows the school and the community in a very positive light.”
