KCR-1 Board Approves School Bus Purchase

The Knox County R-1 Board of Education met on Tuesday evening, December 16, 2008.
The amended agenda was approved having included Junior High Softball under Unfinished Business. Minutes from the meetings on November 18, 2008 were approved as well as approval for payment of the December 2008 warrants.
Sheree Prebe, Gamm, Inc. addressed the Board to discuss programs available for At-Risk students at Knox County R-1 High School.
Administrators reports were heard from the superintendent and administrators. High School Principal Andy Turgeon reported on the procedure that was used during the intruder drill conducted on December 10th and informed the Board that the PLC Training scheduled for December 17th was cancelled due to weather conditions.
Elementary Principal Marty Strange reported visiting the Green City R-1 School District with Martha Gudehus to look at tools used to monitor progress.
Reporting on the visit from the Regional Professional Development Committee (RPDC) and the transition training conducted by Deb Drury and Joetta Walters was Special Programs Coordinator Nancy Goodwin.
Superintendent D.J. Leverton updated the Board on new developments in regard to the Social Security withholding issue for some teachers. He also reported on the recent superintendents’ meeting with Representative Brian Munzlinger. Some of the topics were their concerns about MoDot budget cuts and exemptions for school districts for fuel tax and prevailing wage. Supt. Leverton announced that a recent report given by KTVO had stated that Knox County R-1 ranked first in surrounding area schools for air quality.
Marty Strange, on behalf of the Community Teachers’ Association, reported on the community service project for December at the Knox County Nutrition Site.
Supt. Leverton reported to the Board on the progress of the work of the district’s Safety Committee in updating the district-wide Safety Plan. A rough draft was presented.
The Board approved the cooperative agreements with Brashear (Adair County R-II) for student participation in Junior High (7th and 8th grades) football and softball at Knox County for 2009, which were the same as the 2008 agreements.
Carolyn Primm, Guidance Counselor K-8 presented the Guidance and Counseling and At-Risk reports. Prin. Strange and Prin. Turgeon presented the school climate report for their respective buildings. The Board accepted the Program and Services Evaluation Reports for Guidance and Counseling, At-Risk and School Climate as presented.
The Board also approved the 2007-08 audit for the year ending June 30, 2008, presented by Supt. Leverton.
Transporation Director Steve Ramer discussed the purchase of the new bus as well as sharing information about the bus being traded in. He also presented a summary of current buses owned by the district. The Board voted to purchase a 65-passenger bus, 2010 Saf-T-Liner Thomas Built, from Ponder Equipment for the purchase price of $61,956 plus the trade-in of a district-owned 2001 International 54-passenger bus.
