Honoring Our Defenders
Honoring Our Defenders
By Beth Hunolt
Veterans were honored Monday, May 25, in a Memorial Day Service at 10 am, in the American Legion Hall. Despite the rain, the attendance honoring the men and women that serve our county was vast. The American Legion Posts of Edina, Knox City, Novelty, and Plevna and the Knox County Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4822 sponsored the event.
Edina First Baptist Church Pastor, Kevin McChesney, who’s daughter Holly is a Marine on active duty, gave a speech on what Memorial Day means to him and the cost of freedom. Floral wreath memorials were then given in admiration the veterans who served our county, and a rifle squad salute and Taps was played for the honored. Robert Stephens, pastor of the Edina Assembly of God Church, then gave benediction.
Those present for the Edina VFW Post 4822 were Robert Ward, Commander, Virgil Doss, Phil Gragg, Ken Berry, David Roush, Jake Karhoff, Gary Clair, Paul Kinsel, and Bob Smitty. Those representing the Edina American Legion were Bob Green, Commander, Bruce Normile, Charlie Hamlin, Ralph Johnson, Harry Holman, and Larry Mitchell. Knox City American Legion Commander, Alvin Grant and Bryon Ewalt were also present to honor their fellow brothers in arms.
Following the services, the American Legion Auxiliary and Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary, invited all the guests to dine.
