Community Fitness Center In Knox County’s Future

Community Fitness Center In Knox County’s Future

By Lori Moots-Clair, Board Member

The Knox County Community Center Board of Directors is proud to announce that they have been approved as a Neighborhood Assistance Program (NAP) project by the Missouri Economic Development Commission to construct a Community Center in Edina, Missouri.  The group has acquired the ability to earn $350,000 in tax credits for a total of $500,000 in charitable contributions from businesses and persons interested in supporting the project over the next three years.
To summarize the project, Knox County Community Center, Inc. will use the NAP tax credits to construct a fitness/community center in Edina Missouri.  According to Lindsey Leckbee, President of the group, “We hope to work with the Knox County Health Department to provide programs on heart disease, arthritis and general chronic disease prevention.  The completed facility will be located north of the courthouse in Edina, MO and will include a fully functional fitness center with exercise equipment and an indoor walking track.  In addition, there will be a banquet area large enough for many meetings and social events.”
One project outcome will be the newly constructed facility in Knox County.  According to Gary Waite, Board Member, “we hope that tax credits can be sold quickly, and the construction could begin as soon as next Spring, however that depends on the generosity of businesses and individuals in the surrounding area.”  According to Waite the group intends to talk with local tax preparers to make them aware of this opportunity, and will begin taking tax credit pledges as soon as October 2009.
