Veterans Visit KC Elementary School

Wednesday, November 11th, the nation honored veterans who served in the armed forces. Members of the Edina Chapter of the American Legion visited with the children of the Knox County Elementary School. At 8:30 am the entire Elementary School, accompanied with the Knox County Honor Choir, welcomed members of the American Legion to their gymnasium.
Knox County Elementary School Principal Marty Strange, lead the assembly in the recession of the Pledge of Allegiance, which was immediately followed by the student’s recession of the Peace Builders Pledge. The Knox County Honor Choir, under the directions of Mrs. Cheryl Newman performed The National Anthem to the young crowd and to the proud veterans visiting the school.
Principal Strange introduced Mr. Ed Anderson of the Edina American Legion to the excited listeners. Mr. Anderson reminded the children why Veteran’s Day is special and explained the historical importance of Armistices Day and why Veteran’s Day is celebrated on the eleven day of the eleventh month.
Mr. Anderson then announced that in past years he had asked the audience if anyone shared a birthday with Veteran’s Day. Bradey Wolten was the lucky little boy who received a special birthday gift from the veterans.
With the help of the Fifth Grade Leadership Team, Anderson demonstrated the correct way to fold an American Flag to the students. Mr. Anderson introduced the members of the American Legion Honor Guard and the honored veterans shared stories of their service to the United States with the engaged listeners.
To show their appreciation to the veterans, the entire Knox County Elementary, lead by Mrs. Newman, sang “Thankful For The USA,” to their honored guests.
