Hurdland’s Annual Celebration Goes Off Without A Hitch

Hundreds of people gathered together in Hurdland to celebrate our country’s independence Saturday, July 3rd and Sunday, July 4th, 2010. The two-day event began Saturday evening and lasted until Sunday night with a slew of music and entertainment, contests and drawings, pony rides and train rides, food, family, and fun.
And if anyone knows how to celebrate the 4th of July it’s the town of Hurdland. They’ve been doing it for 138 years.
Even the weather cooperated this year. Sprinkles started coming down just before the parade began but didn’t last. All in all, the weather seemed perfect for the event. Short bouts of sprinkling rain lasted throughout the day along with light gusts of wind. The small amount of wind and rain kept the event from being unbearably hot and humid.
The American Legion led the parade followed by a hefty fleet of fire trucks. Red, white, and blue decorated bikes, four wheelers, and horses rode around the square. Politicians and candidates handed out candy and shook hands. A long line of tractors made their way around too.
People from all over Knox County showed up to either participate in or watch the parade. Afterwards every one moved into the Hurdland Town Square and many remained all day until the fireworks display in the evening.
