Edina Council Informed Street Work Begins Soon

Edina’s Superintendent of Utilities Mike Wriedt attended the regular meeting of the Edina City Council on July 12. During his report, he explained how the rainy weather has delayed the scheduled street work. He expressed the hope that ditching could begin on the following Tuesday, then the oil could be ordered, as several streets are scheduled for resurfacing this summer. (Update: A breakdown in the motor grader is further delaying the project.)
At the beginning of the meeting, following opening formalities, City Treasurer Peggy Collinge suggested the Council transfer $200,000 from the Special Light Fund to the Street Maintenance Fund, and increase the Fire Department expenditure by $7,420. These amendments to the budget were approved unanimously.
Collinge also presented the six month financial statement to the Board for their review (see elsewhere- this issue).
Annette Sweet, Ameren UE Customer Service Advisor, met with the Board. She gave her annual update, this included future higher rates and tips for saving energy (and money). She told of rebates available for certain purchases and other incentives for businesses. Check at City Hall for a copy of the pamphlet showing the tips for saving energy. Supt. Wriedt also reported that the GAMM Inc. summer crew did some work for the City. Some of the projects they completed are: painting all the fire hydrants in town; painting the curbs and lines for parking; and painting the shelter houses, picnic tables and playground equipment at Miller Friendship Park. He complimented the crew on their work.
He told the Board that he had responded to a sewer complaint that involved a run-off. He filed a report with DNR and corrected the problem.
Supt. Wriedt’s final item in his report was that only two more signatures are needed on the last easement needed for the Morgan Street Sewer Replacement project.
The solitary bid for the recently advertised nine foot dump truck bed was opened. The $212 bid by Jason Daniel was accepted unanimously.
Wastewater Superintendent Brad Eitel reported that the excessive rainfall in June put a strain on the sewer plant, but it held it’s own.
The Board considered a request from Edina Livestock Sales, LLC, for the City to approve the condition of the lot at 301 S. Main Street for the release of the final insurance payment. This was the location of a house fire in July 2009. It was the consensus of the Board that the foundation needs to be removed and the lot leveled with dirt for the release of the final insurance payment.
There were no Aldermen comments.
Mayor Davey Strickler read the Manager’s report from the Clarence Cannon Wholesale Water Commission.
The meeting was then adjourned. A special Closed session was held Tuesday, July 13.
