Firefighters Respond to Brush Fire South Of Rutledge

By Echo Menges

The Baring Fire Department and Rutledge Fire Department responded to an out of control brush fire located one half mile northwest of the Millport Church off State Route M, south of Rutledge, Saturday, March 19, 2011 at approximately 12:15 p.m.
According to Rutledge firefighter, Wesley Weiler, the fire may have started as a controlled burn and accelerated by high wind. He said the fire was under control within an hour of fire crews arriving on the scene and by 2:30 p.m. the fire was out. He estimated a five to seven acre area was burned.
Weiler says it’s a good idea for anyone planning to do a controlled burn on their property to contact either their local fire department or their local Sheriff’s Office before hand just to let someone know they’re planning to burn. Also, Weiler says it’s important to check the weather forecast before burning and it’s best to hold off if high gusts are in the forecast.
Anyone needing assistance with a controlled burn on their property can call their local fire department for information and pricing.
