KC Commissioners Hold Public Hearing On The County Health Ordinance

By Echo Menges

Twenty-one Knox Countians were on the agenda to speak at the public hearing on the Knox County Health Ordinance concerning concentrated animal feeding operations Monday, March 28, 2010. The hearing was hosted by the Knox County Commissioners and held in the courtroom of the Knox County courthouse. According to the Knox County Clerk’s office 85 people signed in at the beginning of the meeting, but there were others who attended that didn’t sign in.

Knox County Presiding Commissioner Evan Glasgow called the meeting to order.
“For the record this is an informational meeting only. Were here to get the public’s concerns on the health ordinance.” Said Commissioner Glasgow at the very beginning of the meeting.

Those who spoke at the meeting were: Lois Campbell, Lynn Bradley, Kelli Luthenauer, Joyce Holdren, Rhett Hunziker, Raymond Burkholder Jr., Harlan Burkholder, Tom Fox, Matt Penn, Mark Penn, Marvin Penn, Diana Scott, Dave Roberts, John Good, John Zeiset, Daryl Burkholder, John Miller, Kenneth Burkholder, Aniecie England, Mike Reed and Michael Penn.
Each member of the community on the agenda to speak was given up to five minutes to address the Commissioners.

DNR Agricultural Unit Chief, Darrick Steen, also spoke at the meeting as a neutral party to address some of the issues brought up by citizens at the hearing.
Eastern District Commissioner, Terry “Red” Callahan, read three letters aloud, which were written to the Commissioners from residents who could not attend the hearing.
The final speaker at the public hearing was Knox County Assistant Prosecutor Jo Fortney who addressed the crowd.

The Knox County Commissioners are expected to address the concerns of citizens on both sides of the County Health Ordinance issue later this month though no official date for further discussion or action has been set.
