Edina Boy Saves His Grandma’s Life

Eight-year-old Trace Wheeler of Edina, like most youngsters, enjoys weekend visits with his grandparents. But for Trace and his grandparents, Roger and Alice Gipson of Edina, Trace’s latest weekend visit to their house was one none of them would ever forget. That’s because Saturday morning, April 16, 2011 young Trace saved his grandmother’s life.
After spending Friday night with his grandparents he and his grandfather left the house early Saturday morning and had breakfast together at the Sale Barn Café in Edina. Afterward Mr. Gipson dropped Trace off at the house where Trace planned to spend the day with his grandma while his grandpa went on to work. When Trace went in the house and couldn’t find her right away he went upstairs to her bedroom to find Mrs. Gipson, who was having a Diabetic episode, was unable to move or speak.
“Me and my grandpa just got home from breakfast and he left and I went up there and she was on the floor.” Said Trace. “She fell off the bed and she couldn’t talk.”
Trace says he knew he had to call for help, but it was hard having to leave his grandmother’s side in order to go downstairs to locate her cell phone. He chose to go find the phone anyway and called his grandfather who, according to Trace, made it back to the house in record time.
“I called my grandpa and he came and he called the ambulance and then I called my mom.” Said Trace.
“After he called Roger he called me and told me to come over. He just took care of everything.” Trace’s mom, Ann Boone, said proudly.
“I thought I was a gonner for sure.” Said Mrs. Gipson who doesn’t remember what happened before Knox County Rescue Medics arrived on the scene and started treating her for having a dangerously low blood sugar level.
Though his grandma had to spend three days in the intensive care unit in the Kirksville hospital she came through just fine and is thankful to her grandson for being there, keeping cool and getting help though he’s never had to call anyone for that kind of help before.
“I was just so thankful he knew what to do. He’s never seen me like that.” Said Mrs. Gipson.
“If trace hadn’t have been there it would have been hours before anyone checked on her.” Said Boone.
