New Record For Knox County Food Cupboard Distribution

By Echo Menges

The Knox County Food Cupboard has set a new record for families served in one month. Friday, August 5, 2011, this month’s distribution served 283 families almost 32,000 pounds of food. The previous high was 267 families served earlier this year. The 283 families served this month are comprised of 739 people. 75 of the families served receive food stamps while 208 of them do not.
The Knox County Food Cupboard distributes food the first Friday, after the first Thursday, of every month. The food cupboard is operated by it’s own Board of Directors and staffed by dozens of local volunteers who not only spend the day before each distribution unloading the month’s supply and stocking it on the shelves in the distribution center, but also volunteers their time the entire day of distribution.
Families who utilize the Knox County Food Cupboard are offered an array of different food items from formula for babies to vitamin enriched supplement drinks for the elderly along with household items and cleaning supplies.
“The Columbia Food Bank buys the food from different companies throughout the year with donated money and distributes it to food banks throughout the state,” said Clinton Kline, Executive Director of the Knox County Food Cupboard.
A public notice of the coming food distribution date can be found here, in The Edina Sentinel, the first Wednesday of every month.
