According to Knox County Sheriff’s Deputy Howard Smith, a Knox County farmer, David Mackey, died Saturday, September 3, 2011, after being seriously injured in a farming accident on his farm east of Baring off County Road 151.
Deputy Smith said, “His wife said it happened around 10:40 a.m. He didn’t come in for lunch and that was unusual. The wife and daughter went out to look for him. The call came into the Sheriff’s Office at about 2:20 p.m.”
According to Deputy Smith the victim’s wife told him something wasn’t working with the tractor, Mr. Mackey tried to fix it when it rolled over his mid section and legs.
“He was air evacuated from the scene to Quincy but they were unable to do anything for him and decided to send him on to Columbia. Because of the storm coming through he couldn’t be flown from Quincy to Columbia and was taken by ambulance. He passed during the ride.” Said Deputy Smith.
A funeral was held for David Mackey at his church, United Methodist Church in Edina, Wednesday, September 7, 2011.
