Holiday Performances and Assemblies at Culver-Stockton College
CANTON, Mo.—In an effort to help students and community members relax in the hectic time before the holidays and help them enjoy the season, Culver-Stockton is hosting two holiday events. The first is an Advent Assembly, Dec. 10 at 7 p.m., in the Merillat Recital Hall, located in the Robert W. Brown Performing Arts Center. The second is the second annual Festival of Lessons and Carols, Thursday, Dec. 13 at 7 p.m. in the Alexander Campbell Auditorium in the Robert W. Brown Performing Arts Center.
The Advent Assembly is the first held by Culver-Stockton’s new Chaplain, Amanda Sorenson. “The purpose of the services will be to take some time away from the busyness of the holiday season and remember the true meaning of Christmas as we prepare to celebrate the birth of Christ,” said Sorenson. Sorenson says the Advent Assembly will be ecumenical service open to all denominations.
The Festival of Lessons and Carols will feature the combined choirs of Culver-Stockton College, wind ensemble and organ in works by David Willcocks, Samuel Barber, Gabriel Jackson and James MacMillan. Also featured will be Gustav Holst’s beloved setting of Christina Rossetti’s “In the Bleak Midwinter,” and a festive “Noel” with African percussion. Students, faculty members and staff will read excerpts from the Gospels and other poetry appropriate for the Advent and Christmas seasons.
These programs are both a part of the Academic and Cultural Events program at C-SC. They are free and open to the public.
