By Echo Menges
Update: According to a Missouri State Highway Patrol crash report, on Friday, November 29, 2013, at approximately 1:20 p.m. Drake D. McAfee, 19, of Luray and Shelby L. Syfert, 19, of Hamilton, IL, were injured during a single vehicle rollover on State Route K three miles east of Baring.
According to a MSHP Trooper at the scene, the vehicle was westbound at the time of the crash. McAfee was driving a Ford F250 pickup truck when he likely overestimated a curve after coming over a crest, lost control and overturned the vehicle just east of the first single lane bridge east of State Route EE.
McAfee was seriously injured in the crash and was taken by the Air Evac Team to Blessing Memorial Hospital in Quincy, IL. Syfert was moderately injured in the crash and was taken to the Northeast Regional Medical Center by a Knox County Ambulance.
The force of the crash was enough that it spread a large amount of soil and other debris over the highway lodging a 4-wheeler that was in the back of the truck into the ground on the north side of the highway and the barrel of a hunting rifle into the ground on the south side of the highway.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol, Knox County Sheriff’s Office, Knox County Rescue Squad, Baring Fire Department and First Responders, Edina Fire Department and Knox County Ambulance District responded to the call.
