DISCOVER NATURE GIRLS CAMP

The Missouri Department of Conservation will be offering its eleventh annual Discover Nature Girls Camp in Monroe County at Mark Twain Lake State Park. This free three-day, two-night girls camp is aimed at introducing young ladies ages 11–15 to a wide assortment of outdoors skills in a supportive learning environment. In 2018, the camp will be held July 10, 11, and 12.

Campers spend three fun filled days learning by participating in a “hands on” hunter education class; shooting firearms and archery equipment, walking through a safety trail, climbing a tree stand and taking the hunter education test. Throughout the camp, the girls will participate in a variety of outdoor skills such as canoeing, geocaching, building a campfire and setting up a tent. Campers learn about all aspects of fishing; from fish identification, casting, tying on a hook, filleting fish, and then go fishing. This all occurs in a group setting of their peers, being taught by knowledgeable instructors who make participants comfortable and willing to try new things.

The camp is limited to 60 girls ages 11 to 15 years old. To apply for Discover Nature Girls Camp, please contact the Northeast Regional Office at (660) 785-2420 to request an application. Completed application forms with hunter education knowledge portion must be received no later than May 25, 2018.

There are also opportunities for a camper’s mother or female guardian to attend Discover Nature Girls Camp by becoming a chaperone at camp. The role of chaperone is not only a great opportunity to have a memorable experience with their daughter, but also gives them a chance to help others enjoy the outdoors. The camp has openings for 12 chaperones. Applications are available upon request.
