A Lewis County child was found dead on Saturday, August 28, 2021, at a residence located at 210 Jefferson Street in Canton. The child is believed to have died from a drug overdose.
According to court documents, the child was last seen alive by housemate Brandon W.L. Devers at approximately 10:30 a.m. at the residence. The child was found dead by Devers later the same day at approximately 5:40 p.m., according to court documents.
Devers found the child sitting on the couch with their head back. He called 9-1-1 and attempted to resuscitate the child, however, the child remained unresponsive and cold to the touch.
Further investigation by the Missouri State Highway Patrol Division of Drug and Crime Control allegedly yielded a bag of meth and heroine belonging to Devers, which was found in Devers’ room. Devers allegedly admitted to having the drugs.
Investigation into the child’s social media accounts revealed the child had found Devers’ drugs and told at least two friends the child was going to try the substance – thinking it was cocaine.
Devers was arrested and charged with endangering the welfare of a child – first degree – death of a child, a Class A felony, and possession of a controlled substance, a Class D felony. He is being held at the Lewis County Jail on a $500,000 cash only bond.
Devers is scheduled to appear before Lewis County Associate Circuit Judge Corey Ray Moon on September 7.
Information in this story was obtained through court documents filed in Case No. 21LE-CR00254 State of Missouri vs Brandon Devers, which is one sided. Brandon Devers is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
