Highland answered a first quarter South Shelby touchdown with 24 unanswered points, taking a 24-8 win over the Cardinals in Week Five area high school football play at Highland.
The Cougars (4-1) reaped the benefits of their artificial turf football field, playing the Cardinals in a second half rainstorm. The Clarence Cannon Conference football match was Highland’s 2021 Homecoming football game.
Cameron Wiseman caught a 77 yard touchdown pass from Trey Cunningham in the first quarter. Wyatt Owens ran in the two point conversion for an eight point first quarter lead.
Highland answered when Robert Goehl raced five yards for a Cougar touchdown. Goehl ran in the two point conversion, tying the game at eight points each. The first half ended with the score still knotted at eight all.
The Cougars beat South Shelby at their own game. Highland scored all three of their touchdowns on the ground. The Cardinal football program is known for their physical play and potent running game.
Highland scored two times on the fourth quarter. Robert Goehl put Highland on top with a three yard run. Goehl ran in the two point conversion for a 16-8 lead. Robert Goehl scored from one yard out. The two point run was good for a 24-8 lead.
Highland out gained South Shelby 322-246 in total yards from scrimmage. The Cougars out rushed the Cardinals by a 227-127 yard margin on the night. South Shelby held a 119-95 yard passing advantage.
Highland held a 20-11 advantage in first downs. Each team turned the football over once. South Shelby intercepted a pass. Robert Goehl recovered a Cardinal fumble. Goehl led the Cougars in tackles with five. Brandon Holder, Brayden Logsdon and Toby O’Brien recorded three tackles each.
Drew Mallett led Highland in passing with seven completions in 15 attempts for 95 yards. Robert Goehl rushed 27 times for a game high 171 yards and three touchdowns. Drew Mallett was 15-53 yards rushing.
Trey Countryman was 5-13 passing for the Cardinals with 119 yards and a touchdown.
Cameron Bringer led Highland with four catches for 72 yards. Brandon Holder was 2-13 receiving and Robert Goehl caught a ten yard pass.
