Highland (8-3) took a 16 point first quarter lead and were never headed during a 38-0 win over third seeded Westran (5-6) in Class 1, District 6 football playoff action at Highland. The November 5, 2021 contest saw the Cougars set a new school record for varsity football wins.
The Cougars will take on a playoff experienced Marceline Tiger team (9-1) in the District 6 championship game at Marceline. The contest tips off at 7PM.
Highland was able to hold a hard running Westran Hornet team to 98 yards rushing on the night. The Cougars outgained Westran 326- 163 in total yards from scrimmage. The Cougars won the battle of first downs by a 16-8 margin.
Highland outgained Westran 277-98 on the ground. Westran has two 1000 yard rushers on their roster. The Hornets turned the ball over four times to one for Highland. Westran had a 65-49 yard passing edge. Highland intercepted Hornet passes twice and picked up two fumbles.
Robert Goehl opened scoring with a four yard first quarter run. The two point conversion was good for an 8-0 Cougar lead. Robert Goehl raced 38 yards for another first period score. The two point conversion made the score 16-0 in favor of Highland after one period of play.
Drew Mallett dashed 13 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter. The two point conversion failed. Highland led by a 22-0 margin. Drew Mallett executed a shifty move near the goal line and finished a 25 yard run with a touchdown for a 30-0 halftime lead.
Colemen Hultz caught a 20 yard touchdown pass from Drew Mallett in the third quarter. The two point conversion gave Highland their 38-0 lead and the victory.
Drew Mallett was 6-8 passing for 43 yards and a touchdown. Robert Goehl completed a six yard pass. Robert Goehl rushed 20 times for 205 yards and two touchdowns. Drew Mallett went 5-73 rushing with two touchdowns. Alex Oenning rushed six times for nine yards.
Colemen Hultz had a 20 yard touchdown catch. Brandon Holder caught three balls for 11 yards. Brayden Logsdon, Drew Mallett and Robert Goehl had a pass reception each.
Robert Goehl had nine tackles on defense, three for loss with eight assists. Cameron Bringer recorded six Highland tackles. Zander Johnson had four tackles, two for loss with three assists.
Brayden Logsdon had two tackles. Isaiah Strub had a tackle for loss and two assists. Westran rushed 32 times for 98 yards. The Hornets were 5-15 passing for 65 yards and two interceptions against.
