Highland Boys Rally For Conference Win at Palmyra

Highland fired in four fourth quarter home run balls and hit seven of eight free throws during a decisive 25-14 fourth quarter run to a 61-50 win in Saturday afternoon matinee varsity boys’ basketball at Palmyra. The contest was rescheduled from the previous evening due to inclement weather.
The teams put on a good show for a nice crowd of supporters from both communities. Most of the contest was closely played. The Panthers (14-10) took an early lead. The margin closed to a single point when Bear Bock and Alex Meyer traded three balls near the close of the first quarter.
Palmyra led 12-11 at the first break. Both sides attacked the rim with regularity. Alex Loman and Devin Stutsman exchanged three balls for a 19 all tie with 5:21 remaining in the first half.
The teams ran up and down the court in an entertaining first half. Laydin Lochman fired in a Palmyra three ball for a 22-21 edge with 1:10 showing on the first half clock. Lochman hit two Panther free throws for a 24-21 Panther lead with 39 seconds remaining.
Drew Mallett answered 18 seconds later. Bear Bock scored with five seconds to play in the second quarter for a 26-23 Palmyra lead.
Highland (16-9) won the game with a 38-24 second half. The Cougars were hot from the field and the free throw line. Palmyra finished with a 15-11 edge in made field goals. Highland led 8-5 in made three pointers.
Highland was able to defend with putting the Panthers on the free throw line excessively. The Cougars were 15-18 from the line. Palmyra went 5-9 from the charity stripe.
Palmyra held a three point lead much of the third quarter. Brandon Holder sunk a pair of Highland free throws, knotting matters at 36 all with 24.6 seconds remaining in the third period.
The teams took the fourth quarter court tied at 36. Robert Goehl and Alex Meyer canned Highland threes during an 11-4 Cougar run to a 47-40 lead with 4:54 remaining in the game.
Mason Roberts grabbed a rebound and stuck the ball in the basket, pulling Palmyra back within a 47- 42 deficit with 4:29 remaining. Alex Meyer hit a three for a 52-44 Highland lead with 3:37 remaining.
Bear Bock and Alex Loman scored during a furious exchange just after the three minute point of the fourth quarter. Cameron Bringer answered with a turnover fueled Highland bucket with 2:19 to play in regulation. Highland clung to a 54-48 lead.
Alex Loman picked up his fourth foul with 2:06 showing on the final period clock. Robert Goehl cashed in with two free throws. Bear Bock pulled Palmyra back wo a 57-50 deficit with 1:31 remaining.
Alex Meyer capitalized with a free throw after Alex Loman fouled out. Highland’s Robert Goehl made all six of his fourth quarter free throw attempts. The Cougars led 59-50 with 1:04 to play in the game.
Highland closed on a 25-14 run to the 61-50 victory. Bear Bock fired in 17 Palmyra points. Alex Loman tossed in 13 points. Laydin Lochman was in double digits with ten points. Mason Roberts scored six points. Adam Goodwin and Carson Hicks added two Panther points each.
Drew Mallett led all scorers with 18 Highland points. Alex Meyer scored 13. Robert Goehl was the third Cougar in double figures with 12 points. Cameron Bringer tossed in eight points. Devin Stutsman and Brandon Holder added five points each to the winning total.
