DAVID RICHARD SMITH
David Richard Smith, age 80, of Montgomery, Alabama, formerly of the Novelty community, passed away on November 3, 2021, at his home in Montgomery, Alabama. A celebration of life was held November 19, 2021, at The Chapel at Frazier United Methodist Church, Montgomery, Alabama.
Born in Hurdland, Missouri, on March 3, 1941, David graduated from the Novelty High School in 1959, and the University of Missouri in 1963, with a BS in Mechanical Engineering. While at the University of Missouri he was a member of the ROTC. He served in the U.S. Army and Army Reserves from 1963 to 1971, achieving the rank of captain.
While attending high school he met his wife of 60 years, Lois Elaine Smith; they married on September 3, 1961, at the Novelty Christian Church in Novelty, MO.
Surviving are his wife Lois Elaine Smith of Montgomery, AL; three children, Jeffery Douglas “Doug” (Angela) Smith of Auburn, AL, Christopher “Chris” Eugene Smith of Lapine, AL, and Kevin Lee (Wendy) Smith of Slinger, WI; seven grandchildren, Riley Curran Smith, Lauren Taylor and Melissa Shelley Smith, Jessica Barton, Carson, Colton, and Kaley Wendorf; great grandchildren Gavin, Bailey, Eli, and Rhett Barton; siblings-in-law, Janie Smith and Dean Bradley; as well as four nephews and one niece.
The couple moved their family to Montgomery, Alabama, in 1983. He was a member of Frazier United Methodist Church, Montgomery, Alabama, for decades. He was also a longtime member of Gideons and served as President for several years.
David was preceded in death by his brother, William Jeffery “Jeff” Smith and sister, Martha Ann Bradley; his parents, Will Edwin “Buck” Smith and Ruth Howerton Smith.
Graveside service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, July 23, 2022, in the Locust Hill Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor’s choice. Memorials may be left at or mailed to Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home, P.O. Box 1, Edina, MO 63537.
