Troy-Buchanan Wins 15th Annual Leadoff Classic Over Highland
Troy-Buchanan (4- 0) scored two second inning runs to win their 15th Annual Leadoff Classic Varsity Softball Tournament over Highland (3-1) by a 5-1 final score.
Bryanna Getz recorded a two out, two run second inning hit. Macie Hunolt doubled in a fifth inning Trojan run.
MiKayla Dreyer tripled leading off the fourth, scoring the lone Cougar run in the fourth frame. Highland scored one run on three hits. Emma Harshberger pitched the six inning distance with three strikeouts, one walk on eight hits. Four of the five Trojan runs were earned.
Former Knox County middle school softball player Teryn Brown singled in a sixth inning run for Troy. Brown is currently a junior at Troy-Buchanan High School.
McKenzie Williams pitched the first four innings for Troy. Williams allowed one run on three hits. Macie Hunolt struck out three batters on no hits in three innings pitched. Macie Hunolt was 2-3 for the Class 5 Trojans with two runs batted in and a run scored.
Highland recorded their best ever finish in the large school tournament. The Lady Cougars made the tournament final four for the first time.
Highland Cougars Advance To Leadoff Classic Championship Game With Win Over Fulton
Highland scored early, putting two first inning runs up during a hard fought 4-3 win over Fulton. Mylee Hawkins pitched four innings for the Hornets with seven strikeouts along with four runs on three hits.
Marah Walley pitched the final two innings of the six inning game. Walley struck out two on one hit. Payton Miller pitched six innings with three strikeouts and one walk on seven hits for the win.
Haleigh Winter drove in the first two Cougar runs with a two out single. Olivia Ritterbusch plated Emma Harshberger and Payton Miller with a two run fifth inning hit. Harshberger and Miller scored both first inning runs for Highland.
Fulton scored two runs in their sixth inning. Madison Bright was 2-3 for the Hornets. Fulton scored three runs on seven hits. Highland scored four runs on four hits.
Highland played host Troy Buchanan in the championship game.
Lady Cougars Win Slugfest With Timberland
Highland put nine runs on the board in the first inning of their second Troy Buchanan Leadoff Classic softball tournament with Timberland.
Timberland spent the rest of the game catching up, scoring two runs in the first inning. Four runs in the second and two more tallies in the third for a 10-8 Highland win. The victory advanced Highland (2-0) to the championship semifinal round for the first time since the Cougars have played in the St. Louis area tournament.
Walks and errors aided the Lady Cougar cause in the first inning. Haleigh Winter and Bailie Crist scored on Kirsten Fisher’s two run double. Highland sent 14 batters to the plate in the opening inning.
Emma Harshberger recorded a one out third inning run and scored the tenth Cougar tally. Highland scored ten runs on five hits during the time limit shortened four inning affair.
Kirsten Fisher was 2-3 for Highland with two RBI’s. Six different Cougars drove in at least one run in a solid team effort. Emma Harshberger pitched the first two and a third innings. Harshberger had two strikeouts, two walks and six hits. Seven runs, three earned on six hits.
Payton Miller tossed an inning and 2/3. Miller allowed one run on one hit and one walk. J Thomas pitched for Timberland walking nine batters on five hits. Timberland scored eight runs on seven hits.
Lady Cougars Win Troy Leadoff Classic Opening Game With Francis Howell
Highland scored three second inning runs and Payton Miller fired a three hitter for a 3-1 Highland win over St. Charles-Francis Howell Central in August 26, 2022 varsity softball action.
Haleigh Winter hit a two run homer with one out in the Cougar second inning. Olivia Ritterbusch led off with a double and scored on the long ball. Abby Lay reached on an error and scored on Addy Abell’s RBI hit.
Central scored their run in the fourth inning. Kendal Morelock reached as the result of a leadoff error. Phobe Miller doubled home the run for a 3-1 tally after four frames. Francis Howell threatened in the sixth inning, loading the bases.
The second out was recorded at the plate. A ground ball to second base ended the inning without Central scoring.
Highland (1-0) scored three times on five hits. Addy Abell went 2-3 with an RBI. Payton Miller went the distance. Miller struck out seven with no walks for the win. Mikayla Goforth pitched seven Francis Howell innings allowing three runs on five hits. Goforth struck out nine Highland batters.
