Monroe City Takes Schuyler Co. Softball Tournament Third Place

Monroe City (10-9) scored twice in the second and third innings of the October 1, 2022 Schuyler County Varsity Softball Tournament third place game and went on to defeat top seeded Highland (15-7, Ranked 10th in Class 2) by a 6-1 final score. The Lady Panthers entered tournament play seeded second overall.
Abigail Smith and Perri Dimmitt stroked Panther second inning singles. Emily Freidank tripled leading off the inning. Friedank and Dimmitt scored for the 2-0 Monroe City margin after two complete innings.
Audri Youngblood led off the Monroe City third inning with a hit. Lucy Pratt plated Youngblood with an RBI single for a 3-0 lead. Emily Freidank plated Cahlin Chapman with another hit for a 4-0 Monroe City advantage after three innings.
Addy Abell tripled leading off the Cougar fourth inning and scored on a passed ball. Isabelle Clark drove Lucy Pratt home with a fifth inning Panther run. Highland threatened in their fifth when Abby Lay slammed a one out double.
Abby Lay advanced to third base but was stranded with no runs scored. Audri Youngblood singled with one out in the Panther seventh inning and later scored on a passed ball for the 6-1 final outcome.
The Lady Cougars were hampered by injuries to starting catcher Haleigh Winter and catcher Bailie Crist. Addy Abell was behind the plate for the third place contest.
“They came out and had some really good at bats early,” Highland coach Paul Scifres said. “They put some good swings on the ball. We didn’t answer the call. We did have some hard hit balls.”
“Most were right at people, but you are going to have games like that. The good news is we get to see them again on Monday,” Coach Scifres said. “Hopefully we can bounce back, lick our wounds a little bit. learn from our mistakes come out and have a better effort.”
Monroe City scored six runs on nine hits. Lucy Pratt and Emily Frederick were 2-3 at bat with an RBI and a run scored each. Audri Youngblood pitched the seven inning distance with one strikeout and no walks on four hits. The Cougar run was unearned.
Highland scored one run on four hits. Payton Miller pitched the seven inning distance with three strikeouts, no walks on nine hits. Four of the six runs were earned.
Monroe City and Highland are scheduled to play at Highland on October 3, 2022 the Clarence Cannon Conference meeting between the long time rivals.
