Green City took the ball to the hoop, scoring 25 field goals while allowing only six field goals defensively in a 61-40 win over Atlanta (3-4) in December 13, 2022 conference play at Green City.
The teams played on pretty much even terms in the first quarter. Green City outscored the Lady Hornets in each of the final three periods. Green City (2-5) paced the first half by a 34-25 margin.
Green City outscored Atlanta 33-15 in the second half, closing on a 16-5 run to the 61-40 win. “Atlanta shot the three ball really well in the first quarter,” Green City coach Mike Schmidli said. “They were hot. We couldn’t cover out of our zone. The second quarter, we switched to man (defense).”
“We tried to force them to put the ball on the floor. We tried to force them to go inside where we felt we had the advantage,” Coach Schmidli said. “We have a couple of big girls in there.”
“We can influence shots. We shot the ball well in the second quarter. I think those two things allowed us to get a little separation at the half,” Mike Schmidli said.
Jaryn Hatcher scored a game high 25 Green City points. LilyAnn McCabe put in 16 points from the post. Alexa Lee was the third Lady Gopher in double figures with ten points. Kennedy Parrish scored six points and Paige Pialet added four points.
Aislyn Baker led Atlanta with 14 points. Sylvie Christensen scored nine Hornet points.
“We knew Atlanta wasn’t going away,” Mike Schmidli said. “They got in a little foul trouble. That helped us down the stretch. Our kids are starting to play better together.”
