Brashear Boys Survive La Plata Rally For First Round District Victory

Brashear continued their winning ways, holding off a fourth quarter La Plata (6-19) rally for a 57-49 win over host La Plata in Class 1, District 11 boy’s first round action. Brashear avenged a 63-48 conference loss in December 13, 2022 boys play at La Plata.
“We kind of had a little fire under us,” Brashear coach Shelbi Followwill said. “We had a conference loss at their place earlier in the season. Unfortunately, I had some sick kids and nobody else stepped up.”
“Credit to La Plata for coming back. They had a one point advantage with a couple of minutes to go in the game. We were up 15 and dang near blew it. The kids never gave up,” Shelbi Followwill said. “They settled down. Took care of the basketball when they needed to. They made free throws when they needed to My kids are just bought in and locked in mentally.”
“Credit to La Plata for giving us a fight. We weren’t going to do down without one. That’s for sure.”
Brashear took an 18-16 lead after the first period. Brashear outscored La Plata 10-6 in the second quarter for a 28-2 halftime lead. The Tigers were hot in the second half, leading 41-31 entering the final period of play.
La Plata rallied with an 18-16 fourth quarter. The teams sank 11 field goals and five three balls each. Brashear won the game in large part with clutch fourth quarter free throw shooting.
Brashear went 20-25 at the line. La Plata sank 12-19 at the charity stripe. Tucker Beautte led the Bulldogs with 16 points. Reese Mesecher scored nine points. Cutter St. Clair put in eight points.
Carson Erwin fired in a game high 26 points. Cole Erwin was in double figures with 14 points Lucas Keller was the third Tiger in twin digits with ten points. Jack Reeves scored six points. Avery Zentz added two Tiger points.
