Delbert L. Hawkins, age 89, of Edina passed away Friday, May 19, 2023, at his residence in Edina.
He was born November 29, 1933, in his parents’ home east of Edina the son of Roswell Thomas and Zella Dena Bryson Hawkins. He was united in marriage to Carrie Jeane Hall on August 17, 1953, in Edina, Mo.
Surviving are his wife Carrie Jeane Hawkins of Edina, Mo, three children, Reverend Ron (Joy) Hawkins of Ft Wayne, IN, Sadie Sharon Baker of Warrensburg, and Belinda (J.L.) Brenizer of Edina, MO. grandchildren, Kyane (Tony) Marble, Josh (Rachel) Hawkins, Piper (Graham) Koeppen, Chase (Lyndsey) Brenizer, Nick (Maggie) Brenizer, Brittany (Travis) Wilcoxson, Megan Baker, Caleb (Sarah) Hawkins and Miles Baker. 22 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Delbert was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers, William Bryson “Bill” Hawkins and Milton “Lucky” Gregory Hawkins.
Delbert started working at age 9 at Joe Kriegshauser’s grocery store then later Stutsman supermarket. Delbert was a graduate of Edina High School in 1952. Following High School, Delbert moved to Burlington, IA, then Monmouth, IL to work as a produce supervisor.
In 1955, Delbert Hawkins started selling life insurance with Kemper Insurance out of his car, door to door. He went on to purchase 22 agencies in North Missouri, represented over 100 insurance companies over his career and managed 11 locations. He was very active in the Missouri Association of Independent Insurance Agents.
Delbert was very active in multiple businesses throughout the years. He owned & rented apartment buildings on the square in Edina. He opened Edina Farm & Home along with Don Woodward and Leroy Pinson. He owned the Edina Sentinel office for several years, owned the Bon Air Motel with June Miller and built and developed multiple neighborhoods in Edina. He was integral in the development of the senior housing in Edina and a founding member of the historical society.
He was a member of the Edina Assembly of God church since 1956 where he taught Sunday School and worked on the bus ministry more than 50 years and serve on the deacon board.
Delbert spent over 30 years of semi-retirement wintering in Mesa, AZ. While in Arizona he taught Sunday School and worked with the shut-in’s ministry doing regular visits.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, May 22, 2023, in the Edina Assembly of God Church. Pastor Brian Burton will be officiating the services. Music will be provided by Ron Hawkins children.
Casket bearers will be Josh Hawkins, Chase Brenizer, Nick Brenizer, Caleb Hawkins, Miles Baker, Tony Marble, Graham Koeppen and Travis Wilcoxson.
Visitation will be held in the Hudson Rimer Funeral Home in Edina, MO, Sunday, May 21, 2023, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
