Highland and Louisiana scored three first inning runs each during a back and forth September 13, 2023 weather delayed non-conference softball match at Louisiana. The top ranked Lady Cougars (11-2, Ranked first in Missouri Class 2 Fastpitch Softball) scored another run in the second inning.
Highland led 5-3 after five frames. The Lady Cougars held off a much improved Louisiana team in the seventh inning for the 5-4 win.
Keera Rothweiler led the fuse for a three run Highland rally with a leadoff single in the top of the first inning. Rothweiler later scored on a passed ball. Olivia Ritterbusch played a runner with a sacrifice fly.
Abby Lay reached Lady Bulldog hurler Reece Wommack for a two out RBI hit and a 3-0 Cougar lead. The Lady Bulldogs came right back and tied the game in the bottom half of the first inning.
The first two Lady Bulldogs singled. Mattie Chandler doubled in a Bulldog runner for a 3-1 tally. Jordyn Boehlein doubled two more runs in for a 3-3 tally after one action packed inning.
Manda Jennings walked leading off the Highland second inning. Keera Rothweiler beat out a bunt back to the circle for a hit. Abby Abell stroked an RBI ground out scoring Jennings for a 4-3 Cougar lead.
Highland put the leadoff batter on base when Addy Abell led off the Highland fifth with a base hit. Emma Harshberger drove Abell home with a hit. Highland led 5-3 after five complete innings.
The Lady Cougars threatened when Emma Harshberger and Haleigh Winter singled with two out in the top of the seventh. Olivia Ritterbusch flew out to center field ending the threat with no scoring.
An error put Louisiana leadoff batter Tessa DePriest on base in the bottom of the seventh inning. Jalaya Ries singled putting the tying and winning runs on base with one out.
The next two batters grounded out, preserving the 5-4 Highland win. Highland scored five runs on 11 hits. Addy Abell went 2-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Emma Harshberger was 2-4 with an RBI. Abby Lay went 2-3 for the Cougars with an RBI.
Emma Harshberger pitched the full seven innings with six strikeouts, two walks on six hits. Three of the four Louisiana runs were earned.
Louisiana (6-5) scored four runs on six hits. Jalaya Ries was 3-4 for the Bulldogs with a run scored. Jordan Boehlein had a double, a run scored and another run batted in.
Reece Wommack pitched the seven inning distance in the Louisiana circle. Wommack struck out three batters with three walks on 11 hits. All five Highland runs were earned.
