Timely hitting, including home runs from Haleigh Winter and Emma Harshberger lifted Highland to an 11-4 win over Bowling Green in August 29 varsity softball play at Highland.
The Lady Bearcats took a one run lead in the second inning. Emma Niemeyer drilled a Bowling Green double. Haleigh Winter answered with a two run blast for a 2-1 Highland lead in the third inning.
The fourth inning was scoreless. Fireworks started in the final two frames. Two errors and a hit by pitch loaded the bases with none out in the top of the fifth. An infield error resulted in a Bobcat run and a tie game.
Manda Jennings threw a runner out at home plate for out number two. Delaney Feldman and Lily Bowen drove in a run each. Bowling Green took a 4-2 lead after five and a half innings.
Highland roared back into the lead in the bottom of the inning. Freshman second baseman Keera Rothweiler blasted a leadoff triple. Emma Harshberger plated the Rothweiler with an RBI double.
Haleigh Winter was walked intentionally. Olivia Ritterbusch brought a large Highland crowd to their feet when she drilled the ball over the center field fence for a three run homer and a 6-4 Cougar lead.
Abby Lay pitched the final two innings. Emma Harshberger went five innings in the circle, striking out six with two walks on four hits. One of the four Bobcat runs was earned.
Bowling Green was held scoreless in their sixth inning. Highland put the game on ice with a five run rally. Keera Rothweiler led off with a base hit. Rothweiler stole second base and scored on Addy Abell’s hit.
Emma Harshberger lashed an RBI triple. Haleigh Winter followed with another RBI hit. Courtesy runner Hannah Ritterbusch scored the final run of the night on Bailie Crist’s RBI grounder.
Bowling Green scored four runs on five hits. Five different Lady Bobcats had a hit each. Four Bowling Green players had an RBI each in a balanced team effort. Megan Graver struck out ten batters for Bowling Green. Graver walked one on 15 hits. All eleven Highland runs were earned.
Highland scored 11 runs on 15 hits and three errors. Emma Harshberger went 4-4 for Highland with a double and a triple. Harshberger had two RBI’s and two runs scored. The Lady Cougars had nine extra base hits by unofficial count.
Olivia Ritterbusch went 3-4 with a home run and four RBI along with two runs scored. Keera Rothweiler was 2-3 at bat with two runs scored. Haleigh Winter was 2-3 with a home run and three RBI.
Abby Lay went two innings in the circle with four strikeouts a walk and a hit allowed.
