Pearlie Mae Shaver Applegate, age 92, of Leonard, Missouri, passed away Tuesday, February 20, 2024, in the Knox County Nursing Home in Edina, Missouri. 

Mae was born October 5, 1931, at Hurdland, Missouri, the daughter of Perley and Nina Stice Shaver. 

Mae grew up on the family farm with four siblings. After graduating from Hurdland High School, she began teaching. 

On June 3, 1951, Mae married William Leon Applegate and moved to the Applegate farm near Leonard, MO. 

They became parents to five children. Deborah Young of Port Angeles, WA, the late Roger (Sallie) Applegate of Plevna, MO, Michael (Carol) Applegate of Huntsville, MO, Steven (Coral) Applegate of Hurdland, MO, and Gary (Lisa) Applegate of Linn, MO. 

Mrs. Applegate taught school for many years at Novelty Elementary School. Upon retirement she gardened, read, and enjoyed her grandchildren. She also regularly enjoyed coffee with other local ladies at the Novelty Senior Center. She was a member of the Green Acres FCE until her health prevented her participation. 

She was an active member of the Hurdland Baptist Church until her health declined. After that she worshipped with the Novelty Christian Church until entering the nursing home. 

Mrs. Applegate was preceded in death by her parents; four siblings, Mary, Johnny Margaret and Shirley; her son, Roger Applegate; and her husband, Leon. 

She is survived by her other four children; eleven grandchildren; twenty great grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Gene Howerton; and numerous nieces and nephews. 

Visitation and Funeral services were held Saturday, February 24, 2024, in the Hudson- Rimer Funeral Home in Edina, Missouri, with Reverend Michael Ryan officiating the services. Musical selections were “Safe In The Arms of Jesus” and “The Eastern Gate”. 

Burial was in the Mt. Salem Cemetery, north of Plevna, Missouri, with Bryson Applegate, Ben Applegate, Aaron Forrest, Joey Contratto, Johnny Contratto, and Stephen Howell as casket bearers.
