Knox County Takes a Stand for Agricultural Opportunity with Agri-Ready Designation

By seeking this recognition, the Knox County Commission has demonstrated its commitment to fostering a thriving environment for agriculture, Missouri’s largest industry. The Agri-Ready County Designation program identifies and promotes counties across the state that create policies and initiatives supportive of agricultural growth and sustainability. 

“Over the last few years I have noticed many surrounding counties posting ‘Agri-Ready’ signs, but did not give it much thought as to what it meant” said John Greenley Knox County Eastern District Commissioner. “Last summer I was approached about Knox County becoming designated. Being part of a multi-generational family farm and starting my own business, I sought designation as one of my first objectives if elected. Agriculture is Missouri’s biggest industry. We stand here today, February 24th, and are excited to say Knox County is officially Agri-Ready! I am proud to partner with Missouri Farmers Care to promote Knox County agriculture, agribusiness, and provide class room education for our youth and youth programs. Knox County is officially open for business!” 

Agri-Ready County Designation, in partnership with Missouri Farmers Care (MFC) and local leaders, aims to strengthen agricultural businesses, promote the county as an ideal location for business growth, and improve workforce readiness for careers in agriculture. Additionally, MFC collaborates with local FFA chapters to bring the Agriculture Education on the Move™ program into third-grade classrooms. This initiative equips student leaders to deliver ten hours of interactive lessons on topics such as agricultural careers, crop science, and livestock production, all while honing their public speaking and leadership abilities through hands-on activities and educational experiences. 

“Agriculture and community are the lifeblood of Knox County,” said Missouri Farmers Care Executive Director Ashley McCarty. “Agri-Ready Designation was created to build upon a county’s strengths. Our partnership will shine a light on Knox County to promote the county as a great place to live, work and build agricultural businesses.” 

Knox County’s agriculture industry generated $379.9 million in economic output according to the Missouri Department of Agriculture’s (MDA) 2021 Economic Contribution Study of Missouri Agriculture and Forestry. Key drivers of this economic activity include food processing, hogs and other livestock, and animal and pet food production. Together, the agriculture, food, and forestry sectors have created 1,275 local jobs, contributing $64 million in household income to area families. 

“Farming is a central part of our economy and our way of life in Knox County—it always has been, and it always will be, “said Stacy Harder, Knox County farmer and Knox County Farm Bureau President. “Securing an Agri-Ready County designation tells young and beginning farmers Knox County is the perfect place to start a farm, live, and raise a family. I want to thank our Commissioners Les Cardwell, John Greenley, and Bill Whiles for standing up for Knox County farm families.” 

Counties interested in applying for Agri-Ready County Designation must meet program requirements, such as ensuring no local ordinances conflict with state agricultural laws and demonstrating support for agricultural stewardship, growth, and opportunities. Once the county commission submits an application, compliance is confirmed with the program’s guidelines before publicly granting the designation. 

With their designation, Knox County becomes the 75th Agri-Ready Designated Missouri county. More information about the program and Missouri Farmers Care can be found at www.mofarmerscare.com.

Genevieve, Shannon, Stoddard, Sullivan, Texas, Vernon, Warren, Washington, Wayne, Webster and Wright counties.
