150 Years Ago, April 29, 1875 – PROGRESS – A new roof is being put on the county jail. The people of Knox City are happy. They have a well 150 feet deep with 70 feet of water.
140 Years Ago, April 30, 1885 – FIRE – The residence of Thomas R. Funk of seven miles northwest of Edina was destroyed by fire last Tuesday.
130 Years Ago, May 9, 1895 – BIRTH – A 10 lb. son was born last Thursday to Mr. and Mrs. Sam Mason, who lives southeast of town a few miles. IN MEMORY – Dan Quinlan, 50 years old, was killed Tuesday by a Santa Fe train while working on the track about four miles west of Rutledge.
120 Years Ago, April 27, 1905 – BIRTH – Another little Republican voter at the home of Mr. and Mrs. S.G. Mason, Center Bee Ridge item. LICENSED – Marriage licenses were issued April 20 to James McGlothlin and Ella W. Smith; April 22 to Joseph Lorey, Jr., and Annie Witherow; April 24 to William W. Burch and Ella Lorey, and John F. Burch and Rose Dailing; April 25 to Claude C. Cochran and Dora Robinson; April 26 to Edwin P. Mayer and Carrie E. Pruett. IN MEMORY – Mrs. Walter Berry died Tuesday evening.
100 Years Ago, April 30, 1925 – SCHOOL DAYS – The Newark School faculty for the year 1925-26: Latin and Mathematics, Miss Carrie Downing; high school teacher, Miss Hawkins of La Belle; grades, Miss Ruth Lear, and primary, Miss Velma Minter, Newark item.
90 Years Ago, May 2, 1935 – USPS – First class mail in Edina has increased 50% or more the last few days, according to postal employees, probably due to the chain letters which have the Post Office Dept. guessing. In theory if a chain of the 10 cent letters is not broken, a person’s dime will bring him $1,562.50. WED – The secret marriage February 12 at Barrin, Illinois, of Hugh Elick of Edina and Miss Mary Louise Ford of La Belle was disclosed at a party last week. Alfred Brown of west of Baring and Miss Iris Clouse of Danbury, Nebraska, were married Wednesday morning of last week.
80 Years Ago, May 3, 1945 – IN SERVICE – Pfc. Cecil W. McKinney, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. Pearl McKinney of Edina, is the first Knox County boy in service to be liberated from a German prison camp. IN MEMORY – Cpl. Darrell Lee Knauer of Plevna, 26 years old, was killed in action April 19, 1945, in Germany, bringing the war toil again into Knox County. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Knauer of Plevna. WED – Miss Dorothy Marie Watson and Lt. Wyble Junior Warford were married here Sunday morning at the Community Church.
70 Years Ago, May 5, 1955 – BIRTHS – Mr. and Mrs. Jack Mutchler are the parents of a daughter, born May 4, 1955. She is their first child. A son, Roger Lee was born to Mr. and Mrs. Leon Applegate of Leonard, at Gibson Hospital, here.
60 Years Ago, April 29, 1965 – MYSTERY PLAY – “WHO DUNIT” will be presented at Knox County High School gym on Friday evening, April 30 at 8 p.m. Cast of characters: Alexander Arlington, a mystery writer, Larry Green; Muriel, an angel, Barbara Snell; Isabelle, an angel, Vicki Perry; Michael, the arch angel, Mike Murrell; Annie, the cook and maid, Wynona Waibel; Harry, the butler and gardener, Harlin Campbell; Miss Jenkins, Alexander’s nephew, Jim Holman; Vivian O’Dell, Alexander’s fiancé, Nancy March; George Brewster, Von Snow; Flo Baker, Barbara Snell. Mrs. Madison C. Browne, Director. Admission: Adults. 50 cents; Students, 35 cents. WEATHER – A few made garden here Friday, the first that has been made this spring. A two-inch rain fell Saturday night which will delay field work again, Pleasant Ridge item.
50 Years Ago, April 30, 1975 – TOURS – Mark Rimer, a freshman member of NMSU’s golf team, carded rounds of 81 and 79 in the Heart of America Tournament at CMSU, Warrensburg. The NMSU golfers took top honors in the All-Missouri section of the Heart of America tourney and finished first in a dual meet with NWMSU on April 22. Rimer carded an 80 in the NMSU meet. For the season he is firing at an 83-stroke clip. POLICE COURT – K. Jones was charged with improper backing through a red light at the four-way stop and fined $22. WEATHER – The Middle Fabius came out of banks Thursday, as a result, of the heavy rains. It got too high to cross east of Colony Bridge Friday, Antioch item. WED – St. Aloysius Church in Baring was the setting Saturday, March 15, 1975, for the double-ring wedding ceremony of Pamela Sue Pulse and Richard Paul Witherow.
40 Years Ago, April 24, 1985 – ANNIVERSARY – Mr. and Mrs. Marvin (Dorothy) Shanley of Edina celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary by traveling to Kansas. Marvin Shanley and Dorothy England were married at Arapaho, Oklahoma, on April 13, 1940. They moved to Knox County, Missouri in 1949.
30 Years Ago, April 26, 1995 – EARTH DAY – Kyle Hall and Micah Gunter were two area residents who participated in Earth Day April 22. Community cooperation provided workers as well as supplies and vehicles for the removal of trash and litter at the old bridge north of the Edina ballpark. GRAND OPENING – Gary Fagan, manager of Edina Hardware announced the Grand Opening on Saturday, May 6. The store is owned by Dr. Robert and Peggy Collinge of Edina. IN SERVICE – Captain Paul J. Klote United States Naval reserve formerly of Edina received the Navy Commendation Medal in ceremonies at the Navy Reserve Readiness Center, Kansas City, Missouri. BIRTHS – Mr. and Mrs. Willard (Dianna) Otto of Leonard, Missouri, are the parents of a daughter, Whitney Nicole, born April 25, 1995, at Grim-Smith Hospital, Kirksville. Mr. and Mrs. Jon (Jo Anna) Peck of Kirksville are the parents of a daughter, Michaella Marie Peck, born April 27, 1995, at Grim-Smith Hospital, Kirksville. Mr. and Mrs. Brandon (Chrissy) Rehm of Kirksville are the parents of a son, Brandon Lee Rehm, Jr., born April 25, 1995, at Grim-Smith Hospital, Kirksville.
