HURDLAND, Mo. — The longest-running Independence Day celebration in Northeast Missouri returns for its 153rd year as the town of Hurdland welcomes visitors for two full days of patriotic fun, community spirit, and small-town charm next Thursday and Friday, July 3 and 4, 2025.
Organized by the Hurdland Fourth of July Committee, the celebration will take place rain or shine in the Hurdland town square, located 15 miles east of Kirksville or seven miles west of Edina along Highway 6.
Celebration Kicks Off July 3
Festivities begin Thursday evening, July 3, with a community meal served at 5 p.m., featuring tenderloins, hot dogs, ice cream, and beverages. Throughout the evening, attendees can enjoy karaoke, door prize drawings, and the Little Mister and Miss Firecracker Contest for children ages 5–8. A blind draw cornhole tournament also begins at 6 p.m., and bingo rounds out the evening from 7 to 9 p.m.
July 4 Brings Full Slate of Activities
The celebration continues on Friday, July 4, with parade registration starting at 9 a.m. and the annual parade stepping off at 11 a.m. This year’s parade royalty is Luther and Karen Green. Over $500 in prizes will be awarded across multiple categories, including best dressed pet, best band, best horse, and best float.
Following the parade, guests are invited to enjoy lunch at the Eat Shack before the afternoon program begins with a salute to veterans, a 21-gun salute, and a special recognition of active-duty families and veterans.
Throughout the day, festivalgoers can enjoy car and tractor shows, pedal tractor pulls, engine exhibits, and plenty of games for all ages.
Live Music Highlights Celebration
Music is a major feature of the Hurdland Fourth of July Celebration, with performances on both days. Thursday night will feature karaoke from Kickin’ Karaoke.
On Friday, the Knox County Community Band performs at 12:15 p.m., followed by Mercy’s Bridge Band with sets from 3 to 4 p.m. and again from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Evening entertainment includes singer Lacey Mihalevich at 7 p.m., leading into a headline performance from Shaky Ground at 8 p.m.
Contests and Competitions for All Ages
The celebration offers a wide variety of contests, with something for everyone. Children can compete in the bubble gum blowing contest, pedal tractor pull, and Jonah’s Watermelon Challenge. Adults can participate in the partner cornhole tournament, crosscut saw competition, nail-driving contest, and the always-popular adult tractor pull.
Additional contests include the baby contest for children up to 24 months, separated into age divisions. Registration times vary, so participants are encouraged to check the full schedule in advance.
Grand Finale and Fireworks
The event concludes with the main prize drawings at 10 p.m., followed by a professional fireworks display sponsored by the City of Hurdland and local businesses. Raffle tickets for cash and prize giveaways, including a gun raffle, will be available on site.
With live music, great food, games, contests, and old-fashioned community spirit, the Hurdland Fourth of July Celebration offers an unforgettable way to mark America’s birthday. Guests are reminded to bring lawn chairs and come ready to celebrate.
