140 Years Ago, June 25, 1885 – BIRTH – The seventh boy made his appearance at the home of Judge Hunolt last week. CATTLEMAN – Lewis Wright has 2143-year-old-steers on grass. The average daily gain is three lbs., Novelty item. PROGRESS – R.M. Biggerstaff is planning on moving out his frame livery stable on the southeast corner of the square and erecting in its stead a brick building to match the other buildings on the south side. This would be a fine opportunity for the county to arrange for a term of years and tear down the old courthouse and jail.
130 Years Ago, June 27, 1895 – BIRTH – Born to Mr. and Mrs. Charles Sharp Saturday, the usual ten lb. boy. LICENSED – A marriage license was issued Saturday to W.S. Grubb of Marceline and Miss Ella Payne of Hurdland. IN MEMORY – Lee O’Brien, the seventh son of Dr. and Mrs. C. O’Brien died Monday. He was 18 years old.
120 Years Ago, June 22, 1905 – BIRTH – A daughter was born Sunday, June 11, to Mr. and Mrs. William Pettit, Knox City item. LICENSED – Marriage licenses were issued June 17 to Ned Guy Wilson and Harriett Dee Hone; June 19 to Archer A. Lamb and Lela E. Henry. WED – Martin P. McReynolds of Monroe City and Miss Grace Irene Purdy of Colony were married last Thursday evening in Colony, Knox City item. George H. Hickman and Miss Grace C. Victor were married last evening at the home of the bride’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. S.O. Victor, by the Rev. C.R. Wade. IN MEMORY – James H. Rule died at his Knox County home Friday, June 9, Rutledge Record item.
110 Years Ago, June 25, 1915 – LICENSED – Marriage licenses have been issued to Harold Early and Margaret Ella Delaney, William M. Cardwell and Mary Stephen, Edina. WED – Les Will of Bethel and Miss Leota Smith of Novelty were married recently in Shelbyville, Novelty item. Henry L. Clote and Miss Elizabeth Weber were married Monday morning at St. Joseph Church by the Rev. R.J. Healy. IN MEMORY – Mrs. C.L. Frazee, 40, of south of town, wife of a rural mail carrier, died suddenly Friday.
100 Years Ago, June 25, 1925 – BIRTHS – A son was born Saturday, a week ago, to Mr. and Mrs. Tivy Ahern, Plevna item. A daughter was born Saturday to Mr. and Mrs. Russell P. Elliott, Mt. Salem item. Mr. and Mrs. Orville Strock are the parents of a daughter, who was born June 20, Newark item. WED – Alpha Byrne of Baring was married Sunday, June 14, to Miss Mary Brickerd of Earlham, Iowa. Miss Isabell Sharp of southwest of Edina and Charles Richardson of Baring were married Sunday evening.
90 Years Ago, June 25, 1935 – MUSIC – The first meeting and rehearsal of the new Edina Band in the courtroom Monday evening was reassuring to J. Albert Keith of Edina, school music instructor at Osseo, Wisconsin, who hopes to see a well-organized band here before he leaves. WED – Clinton Overstreet of Edina and Miss Neva Clair of Hurdland were married Sunday in Novelty. Miss Clara Hermes of Quincy, Illinois, older daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.M. Hermes of southwest of Edina and Ralph Sohn of Quincy were married Tuesday morning in Quincy.
70 Years Ago, June 30, 1955 – WEATHER – The total precipitation in Edina during the first half of 1955 has been 18.65 inches, according to official readings. BIRTHS – A daughter, Kathleen Marie, was born June 26, 1955, to Mr. and Mrs. Harold Klote at St. Mary Hospital, Kansas City, Missouri. Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Hagerla are the parents of a son, born June 28, 1955, at Grim-Smith Hospital, Kirksville. IN MEMORY – Melvin Howard, of near Gorin, 16-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Howard, drowned Sunday afternoon, June 26, 1955, in a farm pond near his home while swimming with three other youths. After his recovery from the pond, artificial respiration was performed at the scene by rescuers, then help from Memphis arrived with a resuscitator that was used for three hours without success in reviving young Howard.
60 Years Ago, June 24, 1965 – BIRTH – A son, John William, was born to Mr. and Mrs. T.E. Wash of west of Baring, June 20, 1965, at KOH, Kirksville. ENGAGED – The engagement of Marilyn Kay, to Donald Roy Miller, of Knox City was announced by her mother. WED – Miss Sharon Miller, of Quincy, Illinois, and Larry McKinney, of Newark, were married June 19, 1965, in Quincy, by the Rev. Victor H. Roberts. Miss Judith Ann Gibson of here and Richard Corwin Pearce of west of Greensburg, were married June 20, 1965, at the Community Methodist Church in Edina. Miss Mary Ann Early and Kenneth H. Douglas were married June 19, 1965, at Mary Immaculate Church in Kirksville in a double-ring ceremony performed by the Rec. Leon Allred.
40 Years Ago, July 3, 1985 – DISASTER AID – The late date (July 5) for filing an application for an Emergency Loan from FmHA was announced by Richard Gonnerman, Knox and Scotland County Director. Farmers suffering a 30% loss in production on 1984 crops, pasture and hay may be eligible for the emergency loan. The interest rate is 5% on the losses up to $100,000 and 8% on amounts over $100,000. BURGLARY ARREST – A Kirksville man and a man from Luray were incarcerated as the result of an investigation by the Knox County Sheriff’s office for a rash or burglaries which started in late December 1984.The arrests stemmed from an alleged incident on a Baring property. Additional charges and arrests are pending following the assault of the Knox County jailer by the two prisoners. WED – Bernita F. Parrish and Gary Moorshead were married by the Rev. Luke Turnbough on June 1, at the Knox City Baptist Church. Tina Lou Mason of Hurdland and Christopher Thomas Longano of Edina were married June 8, by Rev. Robert Shobe in a double-ring ceremony at the Hurdland Baptist Church.
30 Years Ago, July 5, 1995 – SILVER ANNIVRSARY – Kenny and Jo Mayes of Edina celebrated their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary on July 5. The couple were married July 5, 1970, in Shelbyville, Missouri. 4-H FAIR ROYALTY – Queen Candidates: Micah J. Gunter, Deanna Morrison, Helen Wilson; King Candidate: Kyle Hall; Princess Candidates: Alaina Murray, Brandi Mallett, Karla Dobbs, and Kate Wilson; Prince Candidates: Jason Doss, Douglas Garrett, Brett Peters, and Lylle W.
