130 Years Ago, August 22, 1895 – CRIME FATALITY – Frank Rodman, the man shot at Baring Monday, August 12. Died last Thursday at a hospital in Quincy. SOLD – Hollister & Sullivan sold the Anthony Gibbons 160-acre farm south of town Tuesday to John Clark of Salt River, consideration $4,800.
120 Years Ago, August 24, 1905 – SOLD – C.W. Mullinex, publisher of The La Belle Star, has bought the Knox County Democrat and will continue the publication with the assistance of C.E. West and Mr. Mullinex’s son, Clio. BIRTH – A son was born Monday to Mr. and Mrs. O.P. Perry, Novelty item. WED – John D. Fisher of Edina and Miss Mary Vivian Rimer of Novelty were married Monday.
110 Years Ago, August 19, 1915 – BIRTHS – A son was born Friday to Mr. and Mrs. Roy Xander. He has been named Howard Wilson Xander, Hurdland item. The Rev. and Mrs. H.H. Fletcher are caring for a nice little daughter who came to their home recently.
100 Years Ago, August 20, 1925 – BIRTHS – A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Leroy McCloskey, Plevna item. A daughter, Mary Esther, was born August 14, 1925, and named after her grandmother, Mrs. William Kelley, to Mr. and Mrs. Boone McLin of Knox City. PROGRESS – Edina is to have a new $5,000 dry cleaning, dyeing and laundry plant.
90 Years Ago, August 22, 1935 – BIRTHS – Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Hall of near Novelty are parents of a son born Monday, Novelty item. Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Dent are parents of a son born Monday, Yankee Street item. A daughter was born last Thursday to Mr. and Mrs. Lee Lindsey, their third child and daughter, Mt. Pleasant item. WED – Miss Louise Clauson and John N. Miller of Knox City were married Wednesday of last week in Macon.
80 Years Ago, August 23, 1945 – KNOX COUNTY HISTORY – The milk-white horse of Emperor Hirohito of Japan has an Edina and Knox County tie-in to the history. The man, Dewey H. Burden, of Compton, California, who sold the horse to the “Son of Heaven” is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Burden who live in Edina. BIRTH – Lt. and Mrs. Junior Golden are announcing the arrival of a daughter, Nancy Lee, born at a hospital in Kirksville on August 15, 1945, Hurdland item. WED – Miss Jewell Norton of Greensburg became the bride of Pfc. Leo E. Brown of Rutledge on Saturday, August 11, at Memphis. Ross Atwell and Marjorie Kilbride of Baring were married Sunday, August 12, by the Rev. Stephen Carew.
70 Years Ago, August 25, 1955 – BIRTHS – Mr. and Mrs. Ray E. King of Novelty are parents of a daughter born Friday morning, August 19, 1955, at a Kirksville hospital. A daughter, the fourth child and second girl, was born August 21, 1955, to Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Arment of Quincy.
60 Years Ago, August 19, 1965 – WED – Karl Ludwig Schmidt and Miss Gloria Jane Pape were married August 14, 1965. Patricia Kay Moran and John E. Witte III were married August 7, 1965, Richard Ray Slocum and Vicky Sprig of Brashear were married August 15, 1965. Donna Jane Doran of Knox City and Henry Russell Mabry, Jr., of Nashville, Tennessee, were married in Canton on July 11, 1965. IN MEMORY – Lee W. Greenley, a prominent farmer and stockman of the Novelty vicinity, died August 17, 1965, at a Quincy hospital. Funeral services for Dr. Charles F. McKay of Knox City, a retired dentist and well-known Knox Countian, were held Friday afternoon after his death on August 11, 1965.
50 Years Ago, August 13, 1975 – FIRST SERVICES – Sunday, August 17, 1975, will be an historic event in the lives of members and friends of the Edina United Methodist Church. Plans for the day have been in the making since a disastrous fire on July 19, 1974, destroyed the former church building. BIRTHS – Mr. and Mrs. Michael Ray Franke of near Novelty are the parents of a son, Jamie Ray, born August 6, 1975, at Grim-Smith Hospital, Kirksville. Mr. and Mrs. James William Pflum, Jr., of near Newark are the parents of a daughter, Brandy Lynn born August 10, 1975, at KOH, Kirksville.
40 Years Ago, August 14, 1985 –. BIRTHS – William and Barbara Gray of Hurdland are parents of twin sons, Andrew Harold and Gregory Luke, born July 27, 1985, at Grim-Smith Hospital, Kirksville. Mr. and Mrs. Jeff Norton, La Grange, are the parents of a daughter, Rachel Louise, born July 31, 1985. GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY – Mr. and Mrs. John N. Miller of Knox City observe their fiftieth wedding anniversary this week. Wed on August 14, 1955, by the Rev. Demaree of the Presbyterian Church of Macon.
