150 Years Ago, August 12, 1875 – FARM NEWS – A. Davidson bought the first new timothy seed and oats last week of Thomas Snodgrass. Timothy Fahey informs us he has about seventy acres of corn that will yield fifty bushels to the acre, but his oats and hay crops will be light owing to the rains just before harvest.
140 Years Ago, August 6, 1885 – WEATHER – The thermometer was up to 110 one day last week, Hurdland Chips item. IN MEMORY – Frankie, youngest child of Thomas and Maggie Bone, aged 17 months, died of dysentery on Sunday last.
120 Years Ago, August 10, 1905 – BIRTHS – Mann Perry and wife are the proud parents of a little son since our last, Novelty item. Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Wickam of Hedge City are rejoicing over the arrival of a fine little son, Prairie View item. APPROINTED – Henry Witherow of Edina was again chosen as superintendent of the horse department of the Missouri State Fair at Sedalia. NEWS ITEM – The Baring Messenger, which had been suspended for three or four weeks, made its appearance again last week.
110 Years Ago, August 12, 1915 – FAIR DAYS – The Knox City Fair in full blast this week with good crowds in attendance and the weather has been fine. HISTORY – The cornerstone of Edina’s $30,000 public school building was laid at a sort of an informal gathering of citizen’s Friday afternoon. IN MEMORY – Mary E. Morry, 75, daughter of Robert and Sarah Morry, and wife of James M. Nichols, deceased was born in Belmont County, Ohio, July 4, 1840, and died August 7, 1915.
100 Years Ago, August 6, 1925 – WED – Miss Inez Mildred Parsons of Brashear and Sumner C. Davis of Edina were married Monday afternoon at Kirksville. IN MEMORY – John Ritz, 71, died at his home in northeast Edina Monday afternoon.
90 Years Ago, August 8, 1935 – BANKING – A new bank, the state Bank of Edina is being organized and will open within a few weeks. BIRTH – Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Parton are the parents of a 10 lb. daughter, born Monday morning. LICENSED – A marriage license was issued Saturday in the office of Fred W. Harvey, Circuit Clerk, to Harry Simpson, Novelty, and Evelyn Rouner, Plevna. WED – Clarence Rhoades of Novelty and Miss Lavenia Turner of near Clarence were married July 24 at Kirksville.
80 Years Ago, August 9, 1945 – FIRE – The farm home of Bernard McGinnis, southeast of Edina, burned to the ground Friday morning. CENTENNIAL ANNIVERSARY – Although Knox County was 100 years old two years ago, the event went by unobserved, but next month it is to be celebrated, about two years late, for which the war might be blamed. HONOR – Rutledge will dedicate a community honor roll service board at Rutledge Memorial Park Sunday. WED – Betty Jeanne Cody and Max K. Bozarth of La Belle were married July 29.
60 Years Ago, August 12, 1965 – IN SERVICE – Seaman Apprentice Robert A. Dodd, USN, of Edina is serving board the attack aircraft carrier USS Oriskany which recently departed Japan after a two-week visit. Oriskany is presently in the attack aircraft carrier US Seventh Fleet, supplying air support for American and South Vietnamese operations in both North and South Vietnam. FARMING – Knox County was the hardest hit of any Northeast Missouri county on insured wheat losses, officials of the Federal Crop Insurance Corporation reported this week. It is reported that more than $10,000 in wheat loss payments is going to Knox County farmers. BIRTH – Mr. and Mrs. Richard Goodwin are the parents of a daughter, Virginia Ann, born August 5, 1965, at Gibson Hospital.
50 Years Ago, August 6, 1975 – CENTENNIAL ANNIVERSARY – Nestled in a grove of large trees about five and one-half miles southwest of Novelty is Eucebia Church which will celebrate the church centennial on August 10, 1975. Eucebia was erected in 1875 when land was donated by the Rinehart family, early settlers of Knox County, and patterned after a church located near Romney, West Virginia, which was also named Eucebia. The church originally was a Cumberland Presbyterian Church. It was closed for 40 years and reopened in June 1962 without any denominational connection. The original pews and pulpit in use today were brought from Quincy, Illinois, by horse and wagon along with lumber to build the church. WED – Miss Carol Campbell of near Newark and Clyde “Jim” Meier, Jr., of Des Moines, Iowa, were united in marriage in a double-ring ceremony at Walnut Wood State Park, Des Moines, Iowa on July 26, 1975. BIG ATTRACTION – An estimated 1,000 persons packed the Novelty Community Park Saturday night to witness the annual Novelty Tractor Pull, with 15 classes. Local First Place winners included: 1938 and older 0-5,000, Doyle Benson and 5000 Pete Boudreau; 1-5000 now blower, Kenneth Scoggin; 5500-7000 no blower, David McEwen of Leonard; Hot rod 5200, Doug Palmer; Hot Rod 7200, Danny Miller; 9000-12,000 no blower, Billy Joe Wilkerson; 15,000 up, Lester Snow.
40 Years Ago, August 7, 1985 – WEATHER – Rains came to Edina and Knox County with a vengeance Tuesday, July 30, 1985, accompanied by high winds and electrical storms, which damaged some properties. Edina citizens reported rain gauges anywhere from 4 ½ to 5 inches of rainfall for the night of July 29 with accumulation causing flooding in many low-lying areas. Sewage treatment was stalled with a transformer burned out during the electrical storm leaving the plant out of operation for over a day. Richard Hayes reported that a transformer had to be shipped from St. Louis. BIRTHS – Mr. and Mrs. Bob Sandknop of Kirksville are the parents of a daughter, Erin Kiley, born July 31, 1985, in Grim-Smith Hospital, Kirksville. Mr. and Mrs. Terry Lay of La Belle are the parents of a son, Craig Norton born July 1, 1985, in Blessing Hospital. ENGAGED – The engagement of Phoebe Ann Runquist to Jon Richard Adams was announced by her parents. An August 11, 1985, wedding in the La Belle Christian Church planned. FAIR ROYALTY – The 1985 Knox County 4-H Fair royalty was chosen July 25: Princess Patra Tungate, Prince Stephan Miller, Queen Cheri Pinson escorted by Chris Campbell.
