Submitted by Crystal Murr, MU Extension Knox County – 4-H Youth Program Associate
On Wednesday morning, June 11, 2025, Crystal Murr, 4-H YPA, presented to youth during Library Story Hour at the Knox County Library. Using Leave No Trace curriculum, approximately 15 youth ranging in age from infant to early elementary participated in Leave No Trace, an outdoor ethics program, consistent with the Community Helpers summer reading theme.
Participants were reminded that community helpers are not always grown-ups, and that they can be community helpers, too. Murr read the story, We Leave No Trace! Written by Terry Pierce and Illustrated by Nadja Sarell to them and discussed the Seven Principles of Leave No Trace.
Youth practiced using the hand signals for the seven principles to help them remember when they’re out in nature. They also discussed different scenarios in which children and their parents were not practicing outdoor ethics and what they could have done differently to leave no trace. Then, each child illustrated an example of a Leave No Trace practice.
At the end of the program, a name was drawn for the We Leave No Trace book, sponsored by Knox County Extension.

Be sure to stop in and sign up for the Summer Reading Program. Get a reading slip and bring it back for a prize. We have different programs for children of all ages. We can’t wait to see YOU at the library! Photo submitted by Sarah Pflum
