140 Years Ago, July 9, 1885 – HAPPY BIRTHDAY – Old “Uncle” John B. Hunsaker celebrated his ninety-first birthday on the Fourth of July, Novelty item.
130 Years Ago, July 11, 1895 – BIRTH – A son was born Monday to Mr. and Mrs. Thomas White. PROGRESS – Ed and Willie Coleman have purchased a new fourteen-horse steam threshing outfit, Stringtown item. The canning factory was sold Saturday by the sheriff under two executions. Consideration $270. Frobes Brothers were the buyers.
110 Years Ago, July 15, 1915 – FIRE – The Catholic Church at Millport burned down Saturday night, supposedly struck by lightning. The church was built about 45 years before when Millport was a thriving town.
100 Years Ago, July 9, 1925 – BIRTH – Mr. and Mrs. Don Jones are the parents of a daughter, born Friday. Mrs. Jones before her marriage was Miss Blanche Hayden, Newark item. WED – Eugene Forrest Corbin of near Hurdland and Miss Roxie Eunice Parrish, of near Knox City, were married July 4. IN MEMORY – Thomas Turpin, whose home was in Edina, died Monday in Quincy. PROGRESS – John W. Hudson of Novelty bought the interest of Charles F. Jarvies in the Mudd & Jarvies Undertaking establishment Saturday. He will come to Edina in the near future to take up the partnership.
90 Years Ago, July 11, 1935 – BIRTH – Mr. and Mrs. Nobel Bishop are the parents of a son, their second child, born Monday. WED – James Robert Sheets, Ft. Scott, Kansas, and Mildred Lucille Marquardt, Edina, were married here the Fourth of July. Miss Juanita Hook and Paul Roberts of Hurdland were married Sunday morning at the home of the bride’s parents. TAXES – Tokens will become a part of the pocket change on and after August 27, when the new 1% sales tax law becomes effective in Missouri.
80 Years Ago, July 12, 1945 – PROGRESS – The opening of the KnoxCo Canteen Saturday evening was all that could be desired. More than a hundred youth were present.
70 Years Ago, July 14, 1955 – INJURED – David Parrish, 27, of the Swann Corner neighborhood, was injured yesterday morning while working on the Lee Greenley, Jr., place west of Novelty, when a cable to a disc from a tractor he was driving snapped and struck him in the back. He was taken to Gibson Hospital here. VANDALS – At least five rural mailboxes were damaged Wednesday night of last week by vandals on two routes on Bee Ridge and one of Knox City. William A. Barnes, Sheriff of Knox County, investigated and notified postal authorities, that the ends of most of the boxes had been blown out, apparently by firecrackers. He picked up some pieces of fired firecrackers. The Sheriff said all indications point to boys who apparently did not realize the seriousness of tampering with mailboxes. He believed the guilty parties are known but it is not known what action postal authorities will take. ENGAGED – The engagement of Miss Ada Jane Campbell to Gail Lee “Cotton” Dixson was announced by her parents. An August wedding planned. WED – Miss Carol June Dye of Edina and Kenneth Charles Kline were married at 2 o’clock Friday afternoon, July 8, 1955, at the Edina Christian Church in a double-ring ceremony performed by Don Gee, pastor. AT THE LINDINA – TWO Double Features: “Tarzan’s Hidden Jungle” starring Gordon Scott, Vera Miles, Peter Van Eyck, Jack Elam and Zippy and “Three Hours to Kill” starring Dana Andrews and Donna Reed. “Deep In My Heart” and “The Flea Circus”.
60 Years Ago, July 8, 1965 – ROBBED – Mrs. G.E. Doss of Edina brought The Sentinel a clipping from the Omaha, Nebraska World Herald which told of the robbery of her son, Ronald Smock, and Jimmy Small, a son of Mrs. Fern Small of Greensburg. Both boys have been employed there recently and had been home for the holiday weekend. The incident happened late Sunday night when three men jumped into the rear seat of their car as it halted for a red-light and they were ordered to drive to a point south of there. Ronald told his mother that he was lying back on the seat asleep when they jumped into the car and two of the men with a switch blade took six dollars, his watch, and a payroll check, and the other took Jimmy but he fought them off and they did not get any money from him. Ronald had a gash on his head above his eye, which took seven stitches to close, caused when one of the men hurled a rock at him as they drove away. FIRE – The barn on the J.H. Sandknop farm south of town was discovered to be on fire by a passing motorist on Wednesday evening of last week. Some volunteers extinguished the fire before much damage was done. Origin of the fire was not determined. BIRTHS – Mr. and Mrs. Byron Fowler of near Rutledge are the parents of a daughter born July 6, 1965, at Laughlin Hospital, Kirksville. Mr. and Mrs. Carl William Farris of Baring are the parents of a son born July 2, 1965, at Grim-Smith Hospital, Kirksville. WED – Mr. and Mrs. William Henry Gonnerman were married June 26, 1965, at Colony Baptist Church. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Eugene Wood were married June 27, 1965, at Shelbyville Christian Church.
50 Years Ago, July 16, 1975 – SOLD – Herzog Lumber Co. in Knox City, founded in 1951 by the late Earl Herzog, has been sold to Max Teeter of Trenton, a former wholesale lumber salesman. Clair Higgins, manager of the company the last seven years said he and the four other employees will continue working. FAIR QUEEN CANDIDATES – Karen Moore, Wendy Hudson, Nena Early, Gigi Rimer, Patricia Ann Flynn, Joyce Lynn Mallett, Nancy Porter, Cathy Cole and Valerie Troutt. ENGAGED – The engagement of Ramona Lea Corbin of Newark to Danny Ray Roberts of Atoka, Oklahoma was announced by her parents. Wedding plans indefinite.
40 Years Ago, July 17, 1985 – COOK OF THE WEEK – Joani Norton, the youngest cook featured as the “Sentinel Cook of the Week” shared her recipes for spaghetti sauce, chocolate sheet cake, Joani’s pizza crust/sauce/toppings, sweet-n-sour pork, creamy raisin rice pudding, and frozen strawberry salad with Sentinel readers. VBS – Over eighty youngsters and teachers participated in Vacation Bible School at the Edina United Methodist Church last week.
