Knox Co. R-1 Addresses “Swine Flu” Concerns

Editor’s Note:  We contacted KCR-1 Superintendent D.J. Leverton to ask what the school was doing with this health concern.  They had addressed it already in the “Weekly Eagle”

In this issue of the Weekly Eagle I will try to alleviate the concerns generated about the “swine flu” in regards to the school district.  The national and local media have been giving out information regarding school closings, how to avoid the “swine flu”, and even when you should go to the doctor.  I am not an expert on any type of illness but do try to stay up to date on what are appropriate steps to take to keep our students as safe as possible.
The school district has been making sure that all surfaces that are touched by students or staff are sanitized daily.  We are also emphasizing sanitary procedures such as:
1. Washing hands the appropriate length of time with warm or hot water especially before eating and using the restroom.
2. Covering your mouth when you cough or sneeze.
3. Stay home if you’re sick.
4. Try to keep your hands away from your face as much as possible.
The flu virus is airborne and spread through tiny particles — mostly through sneezing and coughing.  Our school nurse has distributed information to all staff regarding what the symptoms are as well as what to do if you believe you have the symptoms.  We are taking all precautions necessary and are updated daily by federal and state agencies.  The procedures we are taking have been proven to help prevent this type of sickness.
If you have any questions feel free to contact your local and state health organizations.  The best defense in situations like this is correct information and prevention.
