Canton took a one run lead in non-conference varsity softball action at Canton. The September 20, 2021 contest saw Highland score twice in the top of the third and once in their fourth inning for a 3-1 win.
Macie Fisher singled leading off the bottom of the first off Highland pitcher Payton Miller. Kinzie Biggerstaff grounded out, scoring Fisher for a one run edge. Kadee Guilfoyle singled and reached third base in the Tiger second inning.
Highland cut Guilfoyle down at the plate for the second out. A strikeout ended the scoreless second inning. Kenzie Guilfoyle pitched around a one out Haleigh Winter double. All three outs in the top of the second inning were via the strikeout.
Mikayla Dreyer and Payton Miller started a two out Cougar rally with base hits. Ashley Kaylor drove two runs home for a 2-1 Highland edge after three full innings.
Kirsten Fisher reached base on a fourth inning fielder’s choice and scored on Emma Harshberger’s RBI single for a 3-1 Cougar lead.
Highland (7-11) threatened in their seventh inning but failed to score. Emma Hultz led off the Canton fourth inning with a base hit but was stranded. Payton Miller allowed one base runner in the final five innings in a pitcher’s duel.
Highland scored three runs on eight hits. Emma Harshberger was 2-4 at bat with an RBI. Payton Miller struck out seven batters with two walks on three hits. The Canton run was earned.
Canton (10-3) scored one run on three hits. Three different Tigers had a hit each. Kenzie Guilfoyle pitched four innings with three strikeouts on six hits and three earned runs.
Emma Hultz tossed three innings, striking out three on one walk with two hits of scoreless softball.
